Alleged press image of HTC M8 Eye makes the rounds

The yet to be announced HTC M8 Eye appeared in an alleged press image. The previously leaked high-end handset is expected to debut next week, on October 8 alongside an action camera from HTC.

As you can see in the image above, HTC M8 Eye has the same design as the HTC One M8. However, the newcomer will swap the underwhelming 4MP UltraPixel camera of the HTC One (M8) for a proper 13MP snapper (likely the same as in the HTC Butterfly 2). The secondary sensor for depth of field measuring will also be on board.
Camera aside, the specs of the HTC M8 Eye are tipped to be identical to those of the original. They include Snapdragon 801 chipset, 5” 1080p display, and Sense-d Android 4.4.4 KitKat.
Overall, the HTC M8 Eye brings back memories of the HTC One X+. Launched in October 2012, the latter addressed some of shortcomings of the original One X.

Windows 10 aims to unify your devices

Well, it has officially been announced - the next Windows OS will be called Windows 10, instead of 9 or Threshnold.

One thing the rumors were true about is that Microsoft will aim to bring unification to any device running Windows - be it a smartphone, tablet, laptop, or desktop PC. In other words - the next version of Redmond's mobile OS will also be called Windows 10.

Now, smaller devices will still not get any Desktop in the classical sense, however, Microsoft has been very clear about designing its new OS with unification in mind. While on that note - the Modern interface, the one that was once known as Metro, has been renamed to Universal, apparently to signify Microsoft's intentions.

Unfortunately, nothing has been said about Universal apps - the company said that details on these will be revealed in April, 2015. All we know so far is that these apps will be able to run on desktop machines and users will be able to have them in windows, instead of the current (Windows 8) full-screen mode.

Joe Belfiore, Corporate VP of the Operating Systems Group, was very articulate about blending the experience across PCs and tablets. So maybe the Windows smartphones will not become the productive machines one might hope them to be, but let's be honest - what 5" screened device is?

Microsoft skips Windows 9, jumps straight to Windows 10

Well, it's official folks, Microsoft has officially introduced its new version of Windows, but guess what - this isn't Windows 9 that we're talking about. Don't worry, though, we aren't dealing with some form of a spin-off or an enterprise-centric version - it'll be a full-blown Windows alright. You see, we were all expecting Microsoft to reveal Windows 9 at its event in San Francisco today, but what we got instead is... drum roll, please... Windows 10!

We ain't joking - it appears Microsoft is so proud of the work it's done on the new Windows, that it's willing to give it a bigger name, something that will reflect the new beginning of sorts. Of course, all the meaningful leaks we've seen about Windows 9 thus far remain valid, including the metrofied Start Menu and a refocus on the desktop environment. Stay tuned for more details, as Microsoft reveals more about the upcoming Windows 10, which, by the way, is scheduled for release in 2015.

Pebble announces price cuts, $99 for the original and $199 for the Steel

Pebble Smart Watch
Pebble, the company behind smartwatches with the same name, has announced price cuts for both of its models, alongside a crucial software update that enables continuous activity tracking. The original and the Steel both get a 50$ price cut to $99 and $199 respectively, with the original going back to its initial Kickstarter early bird price tag. With many of the newer Smartwatches selling at much higher prices, Pebble is well positioned to take advantage of the Smartwatch craze and lower the barrier of entry for enthusiasts seeking to try them out.

Recently, Pebble also announced colored limited edition variant of the original design, with three options at the same price. It’s not clear if those get the price cuts too, but it’d be really nice if it did. The advent of touchscreen based Smartwatches running Android Wear doesn’t seem to have made much of a difference to the market yet, as these are early days clearly, but Pebble has been at the forefront of the larger movement, albeit with much simpler hardware and functionality.

After the lunch of the App Store, Pebble claims there are now more than 4,000 apps and the company has also been continuously working to improve the functionality and compatibility with its host OSes, especially iOS. Android already has apps like Pebble Notifier and many other utilities to enhance the watch’s functionality but iOS support is now on par, with even dismissal of notifications reflecting on the phone, with the latest version of Apple’s operating system. Another new feature, as mentioned earlier, is the addition of continuous fitness activity tracking, which was weirdly missing on Pebble, till now, but now that has been added, to bring it on par with all the other smartwatches and the fitness bands.

Finally, to celebrate our success and spread the love, we’re making Pebble irresistible. Pebble is now $99 / €129 / £99 and $199 / €229 / £179 for Pebble Steel everywhere – you’re very welcome.
Above quote from Pebble’s blog post lists the prices for all the international markets where Pebble has now expanded to, including the Benelux region in Europe, the UK and even more offline retail stores in the US. For us Indians, we have the only option of buying it online, with free International shipping, covered by Pebble, but we do have to pay the duties for importing it in. Pebble could have a real chance if it partners with one of the e-commerce giants here, but is the company big enough to do that is an entirely different question. Also, with these price cuts, it’d be interesting to see where the ecosystem moves forward, in terms of hardware. Have anything to say? Let us know in the comments section below.

Adobe Photoshop arrives on Chromebooks

Chromebook users can now access Adobe Photoshop as it is now available on Chrome OS. Google has teamed up with Adobe to offer a special cloud-based version of Photoshop to students and teachers who use Chromebooks. Dubbed as Project Photoshop Streaming, it is currently in beta.

“This streaming version of Photoshop is designed to run straight from the cloud to your Chromebook. It’s always up-to-date and fully integrated with Google Drive, so there’s no need to download and re-upload files—just save your art directly from Photoshop to the cloud.”
wrote Google in a company blog post.
Project Photoshop Streaming includes:
  • Creative tools: Streaming access to Photoshop with other products coming soon
  • Access from any Windows device with a Chrome browser or from a Chromebook
  • Learning tools: Access to Adobe Education Exchange learning content and an in-app Learning panel called ‘Learn Now’
  • Project Photoshop Streaming Feedback and Forum support
At first the app will only be available to users in the US and will require a paid Creative Cloud subscription. Google is adding more power to Chromebook in order to make it main stream. Earlier this month, the company added four Android apps - Vine, Duolingo, Evernote and Sight Words to Chromebooks.

OnePlus 2 coming in Q2 or Q3 of 2015, may be smaller

While being an interesting exercise in making high-end smartphones more affordable, the OnePlusOne has had its fair share of issues this year - most of them having to do with how hard it's been to get your hands on one.
Regardless, OnePlus the company is growing and apparently it's already planned its next release. This will be the OnePlus 2, and it should be out either in the second or the third quarter of 2015.

So I'm talking a rough time frame spanning from April to September. The information comes straight from company execs who did an AMA (Ask Me Anything) session over on Reddit today.
Furthermore, OnePlus is seriously thinking about the possibility of making a smaller device. The message for people who have asked them for just such a thing is: "we hear you". It's unclear however if the OnePlus 2 may be smaller than its predecessor, or if the company will launch a different handset alongside it, in order to appeal to the phablet-hating crowd.
Interestingly though, the much-hated invite system will probably be used for the OnePlus 2 as well, at least at the beginning, for a short period of time - after that we should see pre-orders getting under way

Apple is already working on iOS 8.1, 8.2, and 8.3

Apple has gotten us used to one big iOS release per year, followed by a ".1" update a few months later. The big one is tied to the company's new mobile device launches - like, for example, iOS 8 debuted this year alongside the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus Things, however, may be changing.
According to an unnamed iOS developer, as well as analytics data for an Apple-focused website, iOS 8.1, 8.2, and 8.3 are already in development.

In the past, after the ".1" release, there would only be bug fix iterations of Apple's mobile OS until the next big version hit. But this won't be the case for iOS 8. Although sources say we should expect all of the three aforementioned versions to hit the streets at some point in the future, it's still unclear what this all means.
It could be that Apple won't tie its iOS releases to hardware launches anymore. This will hopefully lead to less situations where the big new iOS version that comes alongside new devices is quite buggy at first. In this case, we may not see an iOS 9 next year, just these incremental updates. One of them might even be tailor made for an upcoming 13-inch iPad.
On the other hand, the company may simply be speeding up software development. If this is true, then there will be an iOS 9 next fall, and 8.1, 8.2, and 8.3 will all be out before then. Earlier leaks about iOS 8 talked about it sporting big improvements for the Maps app, but those never came. Maybe they'll be part of one of these updates, which could also bring support for the Apple Watch when that goes on sale, as well as a new split-screen mode for iPads (which has been rumored before).
Finally, there's also a possibility that Apple has simply decided to stop incrementing the number in each iOS release, emulating what it's been doing with Mac OS - which has been at 10.x for years. If this pans out, then there will never be an iOS 9, just many more 8.x releases.

Facebook is re-introducing Atlas, its ad platform that will allow Facebook partners to target ads at users on and off its website. The social network had bought the ad platform from Microsoft last year.

“Today, we are announcing the launch of Atlas. We’ve rebuilt Atlas from the ground up to tackle today’s marketing challenges, like reaching people across devices and bridging the gap between online impressions and offline purchases.”
said Facebook/Atlas in a company blog post.
The technology, called “people-based marketing,” is the main feature of Facebook’s revamped Atlas ad server .Omnicom Group, one of the world’s largest advertising companies, is the first to sign up for Atlas.

HTC One M8 Eye will likely be up for launch by the end of next month, as per latest rumor. According to the Android developer @LlabTooFeR, the new HTC M8 Eye will come with a 13MP duo camera.

A variant of the HTC One M8, the phone will not have the ultrapixel camera and instead settle for the regular mega pixel camera. Other specs of the phone are expected to be similar to One M8 including a quad-core 2.3GHz Snapdragon 801 CPU, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of native storage, a 128GB capacity microSD slot and a 2600mAh battery.

Google turns 16, hints at possible Android L nickname in a teaser

Google turned 16 over the weekend on September 27th. The tech behemoth celebrated its birthday with a cake that has lollipops instead of candles on top of it thereby hinting that the next Android OS might be dubbed as ‘Android Lollipop’.

Google has been naming its operating systems alphabetically after various sweets and until now we have seen cupcake, donut, éclair, froyo, gingerbread, honeycomb, ice cream sandwich, jelly bean and offcourse latest KitKat. The company announced Android L developer preview at its I/O developer conference in June.  The ‘L’ is supposed to be a short form of Lollipop however, last month Android Lemon Meringue Pie was spotted in Chromium issue tracker.
In the above image you can see the cake(pie) and lollipops so the ‘L’ can be for the former or the latter. It must be noted that Google has been tight lipped about the name of its next OS and it is not sure what will the company finally name it.

Some Rumors About the Upcoming Windows 9

Microsoft is all set to launch the “Windows Technical Preview” for Windows on September 30th at San Francisco. Windows 8 has been a huge failure despite the fact that the company has been updating it regularly since the past two years when it was officially released. The new upgrade is said to be focused on traditional desktop PC users. With the new update, the company aims to fix and improve the Windows 8 mistakes with the return of the Start menu, flexible app windowing, virtual desktops, Microsoft’s Cortana digital assistant, and a whole lot more.
Let us look back at rumors and leaks to show what is expected from the Windows 9:

THE NAME

Most of the leaks and rumours have come with the codename “Project Threshold,” it is certain that this is the next version of Windows. The only mystery here is, what will the new update be called once it is made official for public use. For now, Windows 9 seems like an obvious option.

RETURN OF THE START MENU

Well, it has been pointed out in numerous leaks and rumors that with the arrival of the new update, the company will include the traditional Start menu which has been missing in the Windows 8. The Metro-style Start Screen isn’t exactly gone. Instead, it will just be condensed down into the Start Menu with live tiles. However, the Start Menu will be optionally expandable into a full-screen view for those who are comfortable with a full-screen version now.

CHANGE IN APPS

As a noticeable change, rumors illustrate that the charm bar will be removed, and the metro-style apps will run on Windows 9 instead of a full screen-only app mode. Windows Phone’s voice assistant ‘Cortana’ is expected to be among these newly Window-able apps. Windows 9 is also expected to bring virtual desktops into the desktop ecosystem.

Windows 9 Start Menu

WINDOWS PHONE

Windows 9 version for the smartphones will apparently strip out the Windows RT desktop and include the Notification Center in it, same as the Windows Phone 8.1. It will turn Windows RT (Window 8 version for smartphones) into a Metro-only tablet-first operating system that straddles the line between desktops and phones by offering a more traditional tablet experience. Also, it is said that the new mobile version of Windows 9 would be limited to running only Marketplace apps much like Windows Phone and Windows RT .

Windows 9 Multi tasking

HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?

Various rumors have pointed out the new update may come at a price. However, it also said that it will be cheap, not more than $20. Meanwhile, Microsoft is said to offer unknown incentive to get people off old Windows XP, which has been Microsoft’s most successful windows update in recent years. It is also Windows 7 users may have to pay a bit more than the others.

WHEN WILL IT ARRIVE?

Microsoft has already sent out invites for an event on September 30th. They promise to reveal “what’s next for Windows and enterprise.” It is certain that it will be the Windows 9, and most likely the release of a early developer version known as the “Technical Preview”, in Microsoft’s terms. When the real version hits the market is still unknown. However, all the rumors have pointed out to a spring 2015 arrival.

Sprint opens up Galaxy Note 4 pre-orders

Samsung Galaxy Note 4

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is hitting the US on October 14 but you can already pre-order the phablet on both AT&T and T-Mobile. Starting yesterday Sprint has also joined the campaign, allowing you to pre-book your unit and make sure you will be among the first adopters.
Sprint is asking $720 for the Galaxy Note 4 if you don’t want to sign a contract, which is lower than the $826 that AT&T demands. However if you are to sign a 2-year commitment Sprint is reducing the price to $350, $50 higher than what the largest GSM carrier in the States charges.
Sprint is also offering a third option for the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 where you pay nothing upfront but spread it out over 24 monthly payments of $30.
Finally, you should know that Sprint will allow you to trade-in your old phone and subsidize the Galaxy Note 4 purchase further. Thanks to a promotion the carrier is running with Samsung, you are guaranteed to get at least $200 for any working phone.

Microsoft CEO Nadella visits Xiaomi’s Lei Jun, let's see what will happen in Future ?

China is a market that bears a lot of resemblance to its Indian counterpart. This also means that there’s a lot of undiscovered talent in China, waiting to get the required exposure. This is what Microsoft’s CEO Satya Nadella feels.
Both companies are very different in their approach to the consumer electronics market. But the fact that Nadella visited Lei Jun during his recent trip to China suggests that there could be some common ground, on which the companies would want to build. Xiaomi’s devices most often find use in indie users, whereas Microsoft’s offerings target the corporate consumer.
If at all anything materializes, it could open the door to a whole new segment of buyers for both companies. Microsoft could do with Xiaomi’s hardware expertise, whereas Microsoft’s experience in the corporate world would keep Xiaomi tempted.
So, what could we see next? The way Microsoft has been promoting its Windows OS — it recently made it free of cost for devices under 9-inches of screen — it wouldn’t be a surprise to see something like say, a Windows powered Xiaomi Mi Pad, or even a Windows Phone powered Xiaomi Mi 4.

MediaTek Labs: New initiative by chip maker that focuses on the Internet of Things

How many of you have wanted to control your room’s lights via your non-IR enabled smartphones? I bet pretty much all of you have had that thought at one point. That, and a lot is now possible thanks to affordable and versatile development boards such as the Arduino.
This concept of having your devices, smart or not, connected to one another is known as the Internet of Things. You’re using the ‘Internet of Human’ so to speak to read this article; you get the idea.
Taiwan’s MediaTek is looking to make it big with the Internet of Things (IoT). For that, it has come up with this new initiative called MediaTek Labs, wherein the company will encourage new ideas and thoughts from anyone interested, without having any criteria whatsoever.
The company had already launched a lightweight mobile SoC called the Aster, which first featured on the Omate X Smartwatch late last month. With this new initiative, MediaTek is looking to get on to the arms, and inside the homes of a lot more people than it already does.
The company’s track record also suggests that whatever be the outcome of this new idea, it will be accessible to one and all thanks to the competitive pricing it manages.

Google tipped to require more of its apps on Android devices

According to a report in The Information, Google will require more of its apps to be preloaded on Android devices. Confidential contracts obtained by the media have revealed the upcoming change.
Allegedly, Google will require up to 20 of its apps preloaded going forward. Currently, the number hovers below 10.
Additionally, the search giant will require the apps to be prominently displayed on a device’s homescreen. The list of manufacturers in Google’s contracts includes the likes of Samsung, HTC, and Huawei among others.
The shift in Google’s policy towards its own Android apps is reportedly related to the ever-increasing importance of the OS as an income generator. Google’s apps and services have become a key contributor to its bottom line.
